MAY-day: Produce Hay-day

Gorgeous carrots lining the Union Square Green Market

Well.. rather than the hay-day, it is technically the start of fresh produce harvest (in the North East) – but nevertheless, I couldn’t be anymore excited!

Tulips, tulips, tulips!

Tulips, tulips, tulips!

Shopping at the local farmer’s market is one of my most favorite hobbies (yes, it’s a hobby of mine) and it actually takes some skill to navigate the throngs of people walking dogs, strollers and bikes through Union Square. Imagine: dodging obstacles while carrying the freshest of eggs, sifting through the myriad stocks of asparagus for the perfect (which does not always mean blemish-free) bunch, and fighting to snag the last of the delicious cinnamon raisin bread. Let me reiterate, it is an art, shopping through the farmers market.

And one way that lets me get thought it unscathed (and always with that last piece of cinnamon raisin bread) is my grocery list. GENIUS, right?!

But, here’s the trick – you need to know what you’ll be expecting at the market (whether its your local grocer or farmer’s) and here is a list of the freshest produce May is offering. (Note: the list does not only pertain to the North East.)

With this, you’ll be prepared to face any battle to secure the greenest of spinach leaves and zestiest of limes. Good luck!
